The postprtum balloon is designed to tamponade bleeding from the vagina and the uterus.
-This is a disposable, multi lumen catheter, which is attached to an inflatable balloon.
– It is made of Silicone which is soft but durable for patient comfort.
-The pear shape of the balloon mimics the shape of the uterus and the base of the balloon seals off the internal os which helps to control the bleeding.
-The balloon can be filled with up to 5 litres of normal saline , this generates enough intrauterine pressure to control the bleeding.
-Gas is NEVER to be used to inflate the balloon
-A double syringe along with a three-way stop cock is used for rapid inflation of the balloon.
